What is a Scar?

The formation of a scar starts with trauma to the skin which damages the dermis and causes bleeding. The skin is made up of three layers. The deepest layer is called the dermis. When the dermis is injured by a deep wound, a scar naturally occurs to bind the edges of the wound together. All deep incisions through the dermis will form a scar.

Scar Treatment

Some people are more prone to scarring than others. Scars can become raised, reddened, and firm. These "hyper" enlarged scars are called hypertrophic scars. Treatment of scars with silicone gel can prevent scars from worsening to the point that they must be treated surgically in order to remove them.

Getting Rid of Scars

SCARX topical silicone gel with vitamin C is applied like a cream to form a micro-thin layer of silicone over the scar that can be worn under makeup. The resulting micro-environment prevents and even reverses scar formation over a period of 12-16 weeks. Scarx is guaranteed to beautify scars and quickly fade laser erythema.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Scars are the physiological healing result of any trauma to the skin where the dermis (deep layer) of the skin has been injured. During the healing process special healing cells called Fibroblasts migrate to the site of injury.

These Fibroblasts cover the damaged area and form collagen which is the building block of scar tissue. Normally, collagen fibers line up in a parallel fashion like spaghetti in a package, forming a bridge across the wound. This collagen material is constantly remodeling for almost two years. Sometime in the first two years, this bridge of collagen tissue will gradually contract and pull the edges of the wound tightly together. This process results in a scar that is flat and very thin. The scar then becomes dormant.

An abnormal scar occurs when too much scar tissue is produced or the collagen fibers lay down in disarray much like cooked spaghetti. These hypertrophic (and keloid) scars are reddish and raised. They can itch and cause pain in the worst cases.

SCARX is an FDA registered product consisting of a unique blend of medical grade silicones and vitamin C. Biologically inert, it is extremely safe to use (usage instructions). It is applied topically to the scar after the skin has closed and is actively healing. Reduction in the size and intensity of the scar is typically observed within 12 weeks.

Medical silicone products have been used for years (see studies) for scar treatment. They are a very successful and well documented therapy in the treatment of scars.  Silicone gels form a barrier or micro-environment over the scar.  Silicone gels should not be confused with "scar creams" that are designed to be absorbed by the skin and offer little if any document clinical effect.

Until recently silicone gels provided messy application and inconvenient use.  SCARX gel is an alternative that offers a quick drying, never tacky, luxurious feel in a convenient airless pump applicator.

SCARX works by causing a favorable shift in the production of growth factors (TGF, FGF) involved in dermal regeneration. This shift reduces the over secretion of collagen. SCARX  regulates the growth factors leading to a reduction in the size and intensity of scars.

Wash the affected area and pat dry. Gently massage a small amount of the SCARX Gel into the scar and gently wipe away the excess with a tissue until the area is completely dry.

Apply twice daily in the morning and evening.

For surgical scars:  If incision has been closed with absorbable sutures and steri-strips, scar treatment can begin about 2 weeks later after the steri strips have been removed and the incision is completely healed. If permanent sutures were used and suture removal is necessary, scar treatment can begin after suture removal according to the surgeon’s recommendations; discuss this with your surgeon.

For scars resulting from injury that did not require suture:  begin about 2 weeks later after the wound is completely healed

Scar massage is one method of softening and flattening scars. It serves several important functions

  • Promoting collagen remodelling by applying pressure to scars.
  • Helping to decrease itching.
  • Providing moisture and flexibility to the scar.

How do I massage my scars?

Use the pads or soft tips of your fingers to massage the scar and tissue around the scar. Massage in all three directions.  Side to side, up and down, circular.

A 15g (1/2 oz.) bottle of product should be plenty to treat a 3” long scar twice a day for 12 weeks.  For larger scars, consider buy multiple bottles.

SCARX should be used for 12-16 weeks or until changes in the size and intensity of the scar is no longer observed. It should be applied twice a day, morning and evening. Reapplication may be necessary if the area is washed. (see usage instructions)

Scars actively heal for about two years. During the healing process Fibroblasts cover the damaged area and form collagen which is the building block of scar tissue.  SCARX is effective during this two year active period, however we have had customers claim success on older scars.

SCARX is easily tolerated by children and can be worn 24 hours a day. It washes off with soap and water and can be reapplied as soon as the skin is dry.

SCARX is safe for use on the face but should not be put in contact with the eyes or mucous membranes.  SCARX dries in 2-3 minutes, after which make up can be applied to hide the appearance of the scar.

There are no known side effects associated with SCARX.

Simple, our silicone plus vitamin C formulation is backed by science, a money back guarantee, exceptional customer service, and is manufactured in our FDA registered facility in the USA.

Vitamin C is essential for the control of collagen biosynthesis. It stimulates collagen synthesis in addition to qualitative changes in the collagen molecule.  Vitamin C serves as a co-factor for the enzymes prolysyl and lysyl hydroxylase, the enzymes that are responsible for stabilizing and cross-linking the collagen molecules.

No, you can use SCARX as long as you wish, however there is no benefit in using it once you are no longer seeing improvement.

Your scars shouldn’t come back. We recommend you treat your scar until you are no longer seeing improvement and then stop. Your scar won’t get worse.

Our return policy is simple: If you are unhappy with our products, for any reason, we will refund your money for the purchase price, minus shipping charges for a period of three months from the date of purchase.

Tips

Practical Scar Treatment Suggestions

Avoid putting strain on a wound site during healing: Putting strain on a wound site can slow and hinder the healing process and lead to more prominent scarring. Stretching the skin may open/ widen the wound and increase healing time.

When applying scar gel, a good rule of thumb is to spend 3-5 minutes massaging SCARX into the skin during each application. We suggest using both circular (clock wise and counter clock wise) motions as well as up and down and sideways motions. This will help break down scar tissue.

SCARX has the added advantage of topical application of vitamin C .  But, you should considered taking a vitamin C supplement orally to maximize the benefits that vitamin C provides for health healing.  Vitamin C helps repair wounds and prevent them from becoming infected by promoting healthy collagen production and providing antioxidant benefits. Good natural sources of Vitamin C include citrus fruits, tomatoes, bell peppers and green leafy vegetables.

When soaking up the sunshine in true summer fashion, be sure to cover scars with SPF rated clothing or sunscreen. While the idea of tanning a light scar seems like a nice idea, it’s not. Melanin is what gives your skin a tanned look, but scars produce it in uneven patches. Too much melanin on the upper layers of skin creates hyperpigmentation.

To achieve best results one must use SCARX at least twice daily for several weeks. Prevention and reversal of scarring takes time.  We recommend 12 weeks as a general rule of thumb.

While scabs can itch, it’s important to leave them in place. Every time you pull off the scab, it sets back the healing process and exposes the area beneath to possible infection. The scab will eventually go away as a scar forms.

The body does its best healing during REM sleep. Your skin rejuvenates more quickly because your body sends out healing hormones. If you don’t get enough restful sleep, your body can’t regenerate as efficiently and your scars heal more slowly.

When searching for Scar Treatment products, check the ingredients lists for Silicone and vitamin C. These are the only ingredient documented to be effective on scars via scientific studies published in reputable medical journals. Other ingredients may be good for the skin, but when added to Scar Treatment products, they can actually decrease effectiveness.

Long periods underwater or exposure to running water can make the scabs or softened new skin fall off. This prolongs the healing process. Immersion in cold water for more than a minute or two slows down blood flow, which in turn slows down scar healing.

SCARX isn’t just for surgical scars. It is also great for keeping minor cuts, scrapes, bug bites, and burns from becoming scars. Many of our customers keep a tube in their medicine cabinet just in case.

Efficacy of topical silicone gel in scar management: A systematic review and meta‐analysis of randomised controlled trials

 2020 Jun; 17(3): 765–773.

Published online 2020 Mar 2. doi: 10.1111/iwj.13337

Abstract

To assess the efficacy of topical silicone gel in the management of scars, we conducted this meta‐analysis. The systematic search was performed on PubMed, Web of Science and Embase, and six randomised controlled trials with a total of 375 patients were involved. The outcome data of Vancouver Scar Scale were extracted from the studies and their effect sizes were calculated using Review Manager 5.3. As a result, topical silicone gel significantly reduced pigmentation, height, and pliability scores postoperatively compared with placebos or no treatment (Pigmentation: standard mean difference [SMD] = −0.55 [−0.83 to –0.26], P = .0002; Height: SMD = −0.73 [−1.02 to –0.44], P < .00001; Pliability: SMD = −0.49 [−0.95 to –0.03], P = .04). Topical silicone gel and silicone gel sheet were comparably effective (P > .05). The performance of topical silicone gel and other non‐silicone topical treatment was also similar (P > .05). In summary, topical silicone gel was effective in post‐operative scar prevention.

The Efficacy of Silicone Gel for the Treatment of Hypertrophic Scars and Keloids

2009 Jul-Dec; 2(2): 104–106.

Abstract

Topical self drying silicone gel is a relatively recent treatment modality promoted as an alternative to topical silicone gel sheeting. Thirty patients with scars of different types including superficial scars, hypertrophic scars, and keloids were treated with silicon gel application. The results of the self-drying silicone gel have been satisfactory.
